Piku, a Bengali architect working in Delhi, lives with her father, Bhaskor Banerjee, who has moved from Kolkata after retirement.Piku who describes herself as “strange, weird, irritating, annoying” girl often gets her cab drivers of a cab company into trouble by overwhelming them to drive fast on her way to work, so no driver from the cab company really wants to drive her.Bhaskor, a 70 year old man, with traits similar to her daughter, suffers from chronic constipation. His life revolves around
his remedies and discussions related to constipation and gastric conditions. He often gets into debates and arguments with his daughter on this subject. Piku is close to and intimate with her co-worker, Syed. Bhaskor does not want his daughter to get married, and says marriage is for people with low IQ. At a party, when Bhaskor sees Piku mingling with another guy, he tries to wreck their rapport by saying, “My daughter is moody, like me. Also, she’s not virgin.”Piku and Bhaskor decide to visit their house in Kolkata, where Bhaskor’s brother and his wife lives. Piku also has plans for
selling that house, but Bhaskor is against it. Bhaskor finds journey by plane or train unsuitable due to his unfounded health and psychological issues; and books a cab for the 12,000 km journey. However, the cab driver does not show up to pick them upas he is aware of Piku’s temper issue. Left with no choice, the owner of the cab company, Rana Chaudhary, who is also a close
friend with Syed, decides to personally drive them to Kolkata. Piku and Rana develops a bond of friendship and conviction witheach other in the ensuing journey. Rana also gels well with Bhaskor.

As they reach their destination, Rana gets ready to go back to Delhi, however, Bhaskor insists that he should stay the night at their house as he must be exhausted after driving for so long. Piku’s appeal for Rana gets stronger as she shows around the Kolkata city to him. As Piku is uncertain if she should be selling her Kolkata house, Rana elucidates that her roots lies in her ancestral house and selling it would be like deracinating the roots, leaving behind nothing. They both connect to each other at a personal level and Piku confides in Rana that she does not want to get married as she needs to take care of his old father. Also, Bhaskor doesn’t want his daughter to get married, though he doesn’t object her having physical relationship with other men.

Piku decides not to sell that house. Baskor gets around the city riding a bicycle, experiencing the sights, sounds and taste of his beloved city, while his family back home gets anxious as he’s not returned home yet. As he is in the bathroom, he says that he’d cycle again tomorrow and Piku restricts him from doing this saying, “You think you’re fit to do all this? Your lungs are
fit to do all this? Your heart can not take this. You’re 70 years old.” As she continues to vent out her anger, her father emerges from the bathroom, sits on a rocking chair and says, “Rana was right. One should eat everything. (I’ve just had) the best motion.” Piku says that’s good but no cycling from tomorrow. Piku wakes up in the morning to find out her father  has peacefully passed away last night in sleep, probably due to cardiac erthmeia or sleep apnea. Bhaskor died a kind of
death his always wanted – peaceful, no tubes, no ventilator. At a funeral ceremony, Piku tells family and friends,  “My father was in peace. No ache or dilemma on his face. And those who know my father, they know, that he only had one problem – constipation. But he was cured of that as well before he passed away. So his death was a happy one. And I’m gonna miss him.”

Back in Delhi, Piku learns that Syed too has constipation and kind of breaks up with him. While
paying off the bill to Rana, Rana tells her that after coping up with the annoying habits of her father, she has now fallen into the league of great women like Rani Laxmi Bai and Anne Basant. Piku says that you can’t judge parents, however they maybe and anyone in her place would have done the same. Rana replies that nobody does that in this day and age. When Rana asks her if she could live alone all by herself now, Piku abstracts, “My father has prepared me for this.” She renames her house “Bhaskor Villa” in her father’s memory.
